On September 19th MsIndependent hosted a Habitat for Humanity Happy Hour benefiting the Women Build Project. The project supports women builders constructing and raising funds for a deserving family through Habitat for Humanity. MsIndependent will be participating in building a home in 2015, and this event was our way of making philanthropy look fabulous.

The event was held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel of Houston, inside their Axis Lounge. The hotel donated the space, appetizers and gave us discounts on select drinks throughout the night. Liqs Cocktails sponsored their yummy flavored vodka shots, which come in 4 different flavors Vodka Kamikaze, Vodka Lychee Grapefruit, Vodka Cucumber Lime, and Tequila Cinnamon Orange. Cinnamon was my favorite.  All these shots are made with natural ingredients and are 100-120 calories each. Although it rained all week and we all know Houstonians don't like to venture out when it rains, we still had about 20 people attend, and were able to raise $425 toward our overall goal!

The very next day at 9am we participated in the Love Your Life Conference at Lakewood Church. We were treated to an amazing and enlightening talk by Dr. Caroline Leaf, a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology specializing in Neuropsychology. Her lecture linked scientific principles of the brain to spiritual, intellectual and emotional issues in a way I never would have thought. It was really a fascinating talk, and I loved her accent. Afterward Victoria Osteen and Pastor John Gray answered question from the audience about faith, relationships, and of course men. It was hilarious, honest, and enlightening. This event happens every year so if you missed this year definitely plan to attend next year.
