Phew! June was a tough month for me y'all. Our annual event #GirlsNightOut took a year to plan, and it was the biggest most stressful event that I've ever hosted. My biggest takeaway from the whole experience, more than marketing, more than working with a team, even more than event production, is SELF- freakin'-CARE!!! When you are the business and the brand you cannot afford to go down and feel so overwhelmed that you can't serve your community the way you should. I'm back on the mend these days trying to recover and redefine myself post #GNO, and that means that I am also back to yoga and my weekly acupuncture sessions at Holistic Healing Acupuncture. Amanda Sanchez is the practitioner behind the brand, and is a nationally board certified Acupuncturist and clinical herbalist. Amanda has asked me questions that I have literally never had doctors ask me, and gave me answers that no doctors have ever given me. After our first session I was all in and excited to see what acupuncture could do for me, and now I don't know how I made it this far in life without it.
Acupuncture has done so much for my body and mind that I consider it a necessity. The older I get the more I realize that everything is connected. What affects my mind affects my business, which affects my income, which affects my emotions....you get the picture. Below are the many reasons I've NEEDED acupuncture...especially as someone with a business, a lot of stress, and no insurance. Emphasis on the no insurance part.
Why I Use Acupuncture?
Stress and anxiety - Part of being an entrepreneur is unpredictable income and doing a lot of work, sometimes without seeing the payoff. I'm like many of you and experience not only stress but chronic stress. Although I am no stranger to panic attacks, I do my best not to let my body and mind get to that point, but in the past few months I have been on edge.
Enhanced mental clarity and productivity, and re-centering - When I say re-centered I'm referring to the need to feel more in harmony with myself. When my mind, body, and spirit feel disconnected and depleted, or my mind and emotions are all over the place and I can't make a decision, then I know that I'm out of alignment and need to be re-centered. I often try to center myself through meditation, but my acupuncture sessions just seem to get me there faster, and I have a somewhat euphoric feeling after my sessions.
Chronic shoulder tightness - For more than a year my right shoulder has been so tight that at times I feel a burning sensations similar to the burn you get from weight lifting.
IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome) - This started for me last year and although I've seen a Gastrointestinal Specialist, I still experience gut inflammation. My symptoms typically include bloating which also kills my sense of hunger, sometimes for days at a time.
Plantar Fasciitis - One day out of the blue after a long walk, I came home and the big toe on my left foot was aching. Overnight the ache spread to the entire foot into an excruciating sharp throbbing pain. It brought me to tears and since painkillers weren't helping, I immediately requested an acupuncture session. As I said earlier....emphasis on the no insurance situation.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is based on the idea that energy flows throughout the body along channels. The insertion of the acupuncture needles into acupoints along the body is believed to increase energy flow along these channels to a particular tissue, organ, or organ system. Acupuncture is based on the movement of Qi: the life giving energy that circulates along channels to all organs of the body and enables them to function. If your Qi is abundant and flowing freely you're thriving. If your Qi is depleted or obstructed, your body is thrown off and that's when things go wrong. Acupuncture is used to treat the underlying disharmony and focuses on both the root cause and symptoms that manifest due the imbalance.
Acupuncture treatments are totally customized to the patient's symptoms and concerns. My sessions are 30 minutes long and are painless. Every now and then I might feel a slight bit of discomfort depending on where the needle is placed, but it's about the same level of discomfort as being bitten by a mosquito.
I've experienced remarkable results from my acupuncture sessions, both physically and mentally. I'm always amazed at how quickly and thoroughly acupuncture has reduced or eliminated my aches, pains, and mental fog. After #GirlsNightOut I desperately needed an energetic reset. I felt drained, unclear, and totally unmotivated to do anything. Owning a business has always been a challenge, but as any entrepreneur knows, success depends on how quickly you can bounce back after a difficult or disappointing event. Amanda knew how congested my mind had been and so we started to add crystals to my sessions for added healing. The concept behind using crystals is that each of the stones emit or absorb energy from the body based on their unique properties.
Everyone will have a different experience with acupuncture, but for me I often feel these little jolts of energy that go through my entire body. Its a weird sensation but its also very exhilarating. The sensation is like the feeling of putting something with mint in your mouth and taking a deep breath. It's a refreshing feeling that starts from the top of my head all the way down to my feet, like a cascading wave throughout my body, and then suddenly it's over. I don't feel it at every session, but even if I don't I do feel totally at peace, like the first few minutes after a nap, a glass of wine, and payday all rolled into one. I actually schedule my day around my acupuncture sessions because post-acupuncture Erin is far more clear, optimistic, and energetic.
This year I've learned that the most important thing that I can do as an entrepreneur isn't purchasing another marketing course, or branding workshop, it's taking care of my most valuable asset: myself. Acupuncture initially started off as something I was just trying out to see what, if any, benefits it offered, but now I refuse to go without it. Yes it is that important! What began as pain management has become my secret weapon against stress, writer's block, anxiety, and so many other conditions. I seriously can't recommend working with Amanda at Holistic Health Acupuncture enough. Your session will be totally based on your needs, and only takes about 30 minutes.
